Plastic mulch sheets

THE plastic mulch sheets are an economical alternative to organic materials such as straw, the jute or the wool. Of course, in our opinion it is always good to opt for natural materials, but sometimes, for various reasons this is not possible. In this case, there are different types of on the market mulch sheets, adaptable to the different cultivation needs in relation to the cultivated spaces. The most common and economical are the plastic sheets with a thickness of about 4mm, already perforated at different distances depending on the type of cultivation.

In this article we will see what plastic mulch sheets are, how to use them and what advantages and disadvantages they entail.

What are plastic mulch film

It is about plastic sheets specifically designed for agricultural use, and represent a valid alternative to natural mulch (which of course, whenever possible, is always to be preferred). The advantage of these sheets is definitely the price, (

you can find them here

). However, it is possible that by going to a specialized shop you can get a much lower price than the one proposed in the link (which in any case involves the advantage of home delivery), since this type of sheet is usually sold by weight.
If you do not have particular urgencies and you want to save something, we advise you to give it a try, it may be worth it. In general, however, the cost of these sheets is quite low compared to those of mulches with organic elements. Another alternative we will discuss shortly is the biodegradable mulch.

How to use plastic sheets for mulching

Of course mulch sheets should be placed on the irrigation system. The holes must be positioned at the right distance from the irrigation pipe (max 5 cm). And it must be done in pre-sowing, that is, before planting the crops in the ground. The cloth must then be blocked to the ground using a little soil or, if you want to be sure to avoid problems, a series of anchoring pegs. The expense for these pegs is not excessive and is clearly a recommended choice (you can find them here).

Advantages and disadvantages of mulching with plastic sheets

When we talk about crops of a certain consistency, as we said before, the solution of this type of sheets for mulching it is economically preferable to natural mulch. However, it must be said that some of the typical advantages of organic use are lost. In fact, the problem of disposing of the plastic sheet remains, once it has been used. And above all, the contribution of organic matter to the soil is lost, which promotes optimal plant growth from time to time. However, it remains true that at the level of effectiveness the plastic sheet it can reach up to 95% of weed control. In addition, it can reduce the water intake, improving the soil moisture. For these reasons, it remains a valid alternative solution, at least from the point of view of effectiveness.

Biodegradable mulch

The biodegradable mulch is a compromise solution between natural mulching and mulching with plastic sheet. In essence, it is very similar to the polyethylene mulch, but gods are used sheets made of biodegradable material. These can then be incorporated into the soil at the end of cultivation, or when they are no longer reusable. However, it must be said that, if the problem is the cost of the mulch material, these biodegradable sheets are not exactly cheap. Perhaps their use can only be sustainable in small-sized home gardens (here you can evaluate for yourself). On the other hand, if the economic investment is sustainable, we always recommend using natural mulch.

Organic cultivation

Organic Cultivation is a blog that was born from our desire to spread the good practices of organic farming. To do this we decided to give our knowledge to anyone who wants to get involved and create their own vegetable garden (even using a terrace or a simple balcony). Growing without the use of pesticides is possible and we want to prove it by presenting alternatives biological and effective for any type of problem linked to agriculture.

Mulch

There mulch more often found in the garden it is carried out in the flowerbeds of flowering plants, perennials or annuals it is a layer of inert material to be placed between the plants, in this way the excessive growth of weeds is avoided, since the underlying soil is not exposed to sunlight, with consequent decreased germination capacity of the seeds fallen on the substrate, moreover it is more difficult for the roots of any weeds to be able to anchor firmly to the ground, therefore they can be eradicated with great ease.

In addition to this purpose, with mulching we also get to keep a cool and humid area on the surface of the growing substrate, in order to prevent it from completely drying out during the summer period. This effect is particularly interesting when we grow plants that like to have a cool foot. such as clematis, or some perennials: these plants suffer when the soil in summer dries up completely and heats up, due to the action of the sun and drought.

During the winter, the mulch layer protects from the cold all those perennials, or small shrubs, which are not properly suited to be cultivated in areas with prolonged frosts, in fact the mulch layer removes the root system from the frost, preventing it from penetrating deeply.

Vegetable mulch

I would like to know if there is a bio way of adding calcium to the soil and if black polyethylene mulch is carcinogenic. using the mulch of what can generally be anticipated the plan.

Mulch

But what does mulching consist of? Mulching consists in creating a protection of the soil all around the plants to be cultivated, in order to prevent harmful subtractions d.

Mulch

Mulching consists in the spreading of materials of different nature on the surface of a ground. This technique has several advantages, as it reduces for example the evaporation of water and them.

Mulching

This operation consists in covering the soil of a vegetable garden or garden with inert or organic materials or with special synthetic or bioplastic sheets. It is a technique that mimics what it is.

Mulching: materials

There are several types of materials for mulching. We can divide them into two large groups, the organic ones and the artificial ones.

  • Organic mulch: all organic remains can be used such as dry leaves, grass, sawdust, bark, pine needles but also peat, shells, moss. These materials have the secondary advantage of fertilizing the soil as well.
  • Synthetic mulch: plastic sheets, fabrics, shredded pieces of rubber from cars are used. These are often expensive products, but which certainly last over time.
  • Mulch of mineral origin: even gravel, lapilli and stones can protect the ground and are beautiful to look at.

The choice between one type and the other is made taking into account many factors. Primarily season, because during the summer, for example, plastic must be abolished. Then you can also evaluate the aesthetic factor: certainly something natural will attract less attention.

Insect sheets and other types of sheets

In addition to the sheets to cover winter plants also exist anti insects, anti birds and anti mole sheets. These sheets provide the same protection against frost and climate change, but also provide additional protection against various animals, especially insects, birds and moles. The protective anti-bird sheets are nothing more than particular types of nets, usually with a square mesh for pot plants or gardens, or rhomboidal, in this case much more used for fruit trees. The square mesh net can be simply placed on the plant or installed on a special structure (in the case of vegetable gardens), while the rhomboidal mesh can be widened and adapted to all the various types of tree crown, even the most irregular ones, and is therefore highly adaptable. The nets protect the fruits, seeds and vegetables from bird attacks, as well as being light and resistant. They remain unchanged over time and are usually green in color. The net does not harm the birds but simply prevents them from approaching seeds, fruit or vegetables.

The insect screens are very similar to the antifreeze sheets for plants. The mesh of these nets is tighter than the mesh of the anti-bird nets, to prevent insects from approaching the fruit or vegetables. Insect nets are ideal for protection of plants against aphids, whiteflies, cabbage fly and other insects and they defend cultures without the use of pesticides. The nets still allow the passage of sunlight and water. As anti-bird nets are easy-to-install anti-insect nets, just lay them on the plant or on a suitable structure. The last type of protective sheet is the anti-mole one. This type of netting prevents moles from reaching and destroying crops. The anti-mole nets must be placed on the ground before the creation of the garden or vegetable garden. The nets are usually laid horizontally in the area where the garden and / or vegetable garden is to be created, then the net is covered with a layer of soil (usually 10/15 cm), in order to prevent the mole from reaching the plant roots.
