DIY slate fence: step by step instructions

Our compatriots are used to building high and strong fences that will reliably protect your home and everything around it from prying eyes. This tradition did not develop overnight, since even in ancient times, our ancestors built high fences - palisades that protected their homes from prying eyes. But now everything has changed and more modern materials such as slate have replaced wooden logs.

Advantages and disadvantages of using slate

At the very beginning, the material was positioned exclusively as roofing, since there was practically nothing to replace it with. And only after some time, people began to understand that it is possible to build reliable and durable fences from it with minimal installation costs.

If a roof made of this material has a high level of strength and reliability, then the fence will be no worse.

Fence made of flat slate in a metal "frame"

The advantages of slate:

  • High degree of durability - flat compressed asbestos can last at least 30 years in any weather, and wave asbestos for about 20 years.
  • It is not a flammable material, it does not burn and therefore does not emit harmful toxic substances. But when it is exposed to fire, the slate begins to "shoot" strongly.
  • Has a high degree of resistance to alkalis and acids.
  • It can resist tearing under strong stretching, so it can withstand strong winds very well.
  • Has a high degree of frost resistance.
  • During the period of strong gusts of wind, the "buzz" of the slate is practically inaudible, which cannot be said about the modern metal corrugated board.
  • Perfectly cut and easily drilled with ordinary hand tools.
  • The construction of the fence takes a minimum of time.
  • Compared to a netting, a chain-link or a board, slate costs a little more, but its advantages are quite obvious. Slate, which is coated with special pigmenting agents based on phosphates or silicates, has excellent characteristics. Such coloring, in addition to the decorative function, also performs weather-resistant actions: it protects the sheets from temperature extremes, frost, rain, snow. In appearance, a fence made of ordinary slate turns out to be very attractive and neat, although there is no need to talk about aesthetic qualities here. But the strength is very good.

    Gray flat slate for fence construction

Cons of slate sheets:

  • Slate is recommended to be used in regions with a moderate continental climate, since a high level of humidity significantly reduces its service life.
  • Large weight of asbestos-cement sheets (from 10 to 14 kg / m2). Therefore, when arranging a fence, this factor must be taken into account, since asbestos-cement sheets will simply fall under their own weight and can be swayed in a strong wind.
  • Also, slate does not tolerate strong blows, so it is best to build a fence away from the road so that an accidental car does not damage it. The impact toughness of slate is exactly the same as that of glass 2 kJ / m2.

Types of slate used for fences

Many people are accustomed to the fact that gray slate can be produced in only two types: flat and wave. But this is not entirely true, and if we are talking about the use of this material, then it is necessary to find out as much information as possible in order to choose the most durable and reliable material for your fence.

Flat slate can be pressed and not pressed. The first option is much heavier and therefore its strength characteristics increase by 20%, that is, up to 23 MPa from 18 MPa. It is due to the high density that the strength of the sheets increases by 25 percent, and its impact toughness reaches 2.5 kJ / m2... Thus, the problem of material fragility is partially solved. Also here you can add geometric accuracy and increased frost resistance. That is why pressed slate is the best option for building a solid fence.

Corrugated sheets of asbestos cement can be of several types, and recently modern manufacturers have also significantly expanded the range due to colored materials. Thus, the slate has become more attractive, which eliminated the need for consumers to paint such a fence. Due to the special shape of the asbestos-cement profile, the sheets acquire greater rigidity and strength even with their small thickness from 4.7 to 7.5 mm.

Wave slate for fence construction

The main types and sizes of wave slate:

  • Normal wave - 1.28x0.68 m;
  • Reinforced - 2.3x2.8 m;
  • Unified average - 1.75 x 1.125 m.

The height and size of the wave are indicated in millimeters as a fraction: 40/150 or 54/200.

Wave slate and wave step size

When choosing a wave slate for the construction of a fence, it is best to take a unified profile of the UV brand. Such sheets have a high degree of density, and it is easy and convenient for craftsmen to work with their sizes. The weight of the sheet is no more than 26 kilograms, and the width is close to the actual one, and this makes it possible to minimize the material consumption. But this is only suitable for seven or eight wave material.

Preparation for the construction process: calculating the area for the fence

Calculating the number of slate sheets is not difficult, since everything here depends on simple mathematics. You just need to measure the entire perimeter of the site with the exception of the gate, wicket, and other mandatory openings that must remain open.

Then a drawing is drawn up on which the supports are placed: in the corners and along the entire fence line. All further calculations are made after purchasing the material.

The choice of material, its dimensions: tips for choosing

If we talk about the strength characteristics of flat and wave types, then the difference between them is insignificant, since they still remain a rather fragile material. With vertical installation, the load-bearing capacity of the slate does not matter. Therefore, you need to choose the type of asbestos-cement sheets that are most suitable for your site.

But in any case, flat slate is easier to install and it allows the installation of individual sections without overlap. This means that with a long fence length, you can save one or two sheets.

Dimensions of flat slate State standard (GOST 1824–95):

Material thickness, cmLeaf area, m
0,62.5x1.2------------
0,82.5x1.23x1.53.6x1.5
0,12.5x1.23x1.53.6x1.5

Manufacturers produce material of greater thickness. But for the construction of a fence, it will be enough to buy one of the standard sizes from 8 to 10 mm.

When choosing a slate, you need to pay special attention to its geometry:

  • The deviation from the size of the opposite sides should be no more than 5 mm;
  • The waviness of the sheet with a height of no more than 4 mm for pressed slate and up to 8 mm for unpressed slate;
  • Any deviation from the norm is not more than ± 5 mm.

In order to make sure of the high quality of the sheets, it is necessary to carefully study the labeling from the manufacturer and measure one sheet. Thus, you can compare the declared parameters of the sheets and their actual dimensions. Color is very important: dark spots indicate improper storage of slate and its high humidity.

As for the height of the fence, professionals recommend building it no higher than 2.2 meters. If you put a fence between a neighboring plot, then a height of 75 cm will be enough here.

The optimal height of the fence is about 2 meters. This height is quite enough to hide the area from prying eyes. But it is quite difficult to find such products among standard sheets, and therefore a high fence can be built from a wave sheet or look for a flat one that meets certain specifications, since their size is more than 2x1.5 meters.

How to choose the right slate for your fence

Calculation of the required amount of material: examples, drawings

After you have found a suitable slate, you can start calculating.

Example

  1. Let's say your plot is 6 acres, and its sides are 20x30 meters. The perimeter is 100 meters.
  2. We need to leave a certain place for the gate (about 3 - 3, 5 meters) and one meter for two gates - in front and behind the site.
  3. Thus, the total length of the fence will be 100-3.5-2 = 94.5 meters.
  4. If you plan to mount a flat slate 1.5 meters wide, then you need to purchase 94.5 / 1.5 = 63 sheets.

If a fractional number is obtained in the calculations, then it should be rounded up by one. We also recommend purchasing the material with a margin - about 3-4 sheets.

Calculation of an example of calculating a fence made of slate using the example of three sections

It is best to buy metal posts for a fence. They are installed in steps of 3 meters, but if you want a more reliable fence, you can take a step of 2.5 meters. This will slightly increase the cost of work, but the design will turn out to be more reliable and durable.

To build a fence, we need:

  • Four corner supports;
  • Hinged and recessed posts for gates and gates - five pieces;
  • Supports of intermediate type 30 / 2.5 -1 = 11 pieces and multiply this number by 2;
  • The back section of the yard is closed with two different parts of the fence (20-1) / 2 = 9.5 meters long. For each part, we need 3 pillars and they will need to be installed much more often.
  • From the facade of the house, the length of the fence will be reduced to 15.5 meters. On this site, you will need to dig in corner, pivot pillars and 5 more ordinary ones. In total, we need 42 pillars.
  • If necessary, you can use not new pipes with a diameter of about 100 mm. Depending on the height of the fence, the length of the pipes is also selected. The pipe should go into the ground by about 60-70 cm.

We also need:

  • Bars measuring 50x130 mm. The length is twice the length of the entire fence.
  • Steel corners measuring 50x85 mm. The profile is attached 2 pieces to each of the posts and its length should correspond to the diameter of the support plus 150 mm for allowances.
  • Roofing material, several bags of cement, three times the amount of sand and medium gravel for the preparation of concrete mortar.
  • Fasteners.
  • Bitumen and anti-corrosion coating for processing metal structural elements.

Instruments

For the preparatory work, we need tools such as:

  • Bayonet shovel;
  • Hand-held fishing drill;
  • Construction level;
  • Plumb line;

To build the fence itself you will need:

  • Concrete mixer;
  • Welding machine;
  • Drill;
  • Bulgarian (angle grinder);
  • Hacksaw for wood and metal;
  • Set of wrenches.

    Slate cutting works for fence construction

It is also recommended to carefully protect the respiratory organs while cutting the material, since asbestos fibers, even in minimal amounts, irritate the mucous membranes of the nasopharynx.

DIY step-by-step instructions for building a fence

We will tell you about the main stages of erecting a slate fence, but if you want to simplify your work a little, you can slightly change the scheme of its device. To begin with, you need to install all the corner supports of the future fence around the entire perimeter, and then pull a nylon construction cord between them and apply markings along it for arranging pits for concreting the remaining pillars.

  1. We mark the entire site and drive temporary pegs along its perimeter (you can use pieces of ordinary reinforcement) and pull a tight nylon cord between them. We also mark the places where the supports will be located.
  2. It is necessary to dig holes along the lighthouses to a depth of about 80 centimeters. The distance between the pits must be accurate and uniform.

    Installation of a metal profile for the construction of a slate fence

  3. We prepare metal supports (we clean them of old rust, treat them with an anti-corrosion agent and molten bitumen).
  4. We put pieces of roofing material in the holes, fill them with thick concrete mortar and lower the pipes, making sure that they stand strictly vertically. This can be done using special spacers. The supports should stand until the cement is completely dry for at least 7 days.
  5. Then it is necessary to weld transverse iron strips to each support, to which the beam will be attached. Finished supports with strips should also be treated with an anti-corrosion coating in several layers.

    Installation of pillars for the construction of a fence made of slate with a foundation

  6. We dig out a small trench between the pillars and lay it out with bricks. This will be the base of the fence. If there is a slight slope towards the site, then it is necessary to make special drainage channels.
  7. Drill holes for fasteners in wooden blocks at the very ends and tighten them with bolts to metal strips.
  8. We install the slate on the bricks in a vertical position and outline the points of attachment of the sheet to the beams.
  9. Screw the sheets to the cross-beams of the fence with self-tapping screws, since it will not be very convenient to work with nails for slate. It is imperative to put special washers or rubber gaskets under the caps of the self-tapping screws.

    Wave slate fence with metal posts and timber slats without foundation

If you are building a solid fence, then you need to create ventilation for the entire site. To do this, you need to leave small gaps between the slate and the brick base. Also, slots can be made between the sections of the fence and its supports.

Installation of flat material can be carried out in another way. To do this, you need to weld a lot of metal frames to the size of the slate sheets and then simply insert them there and secure. Then we simply weld such finished sections to the installed supports.

Flat slate fence with metal frames

This installation method is quite effective, since metal channels will keep the slate from accidental breakdowns.

Decoration and decoration

If you do not want to do finishing work, then you can find colored slate from the very beginning, as it looks more beautiful than gray sheets.

Colored slate for fence construction

There are special paints with which you can radically transform your fence. For this, the masters recommend using high-quality acrylic paints, which will help create a special water-repellent layer on the surface of asbestos-cement sheets, which is able to withstand even large temperature drops.

Such paints also significantly extend the life of this material. Before painting the fence, it is recommended to prime it well. For quick work, it is best to use a spray gun. The material is first treated with a primer, and after 24 hours with two layers of paint. If desired, you can even paint beautiful pictures on the fence.

In order for the fence to become durable and reliable, it is necessary to use not just acrylic paints, but special paints for slate.

Special water-dispersion paint for slate

Experts do not recommend “letting in” various climbing plants (such as grapes or ornamental vines) over the fence, as a lot of moisture will accumulate under them, which will significantly reduce the service life of the asbestos-cement fence.

A fence made of slate sheets today cannot be called a budget cheap option, but meanwhile it is much more economical than corrugated board and brick. In order to reduce costs, it is necessary to correctly calculate the number of slate sheets, metal pillars and other additional elements. And if you decide to build a fence yourself, then it will cost you even less.

How to build a slate fence with your own hands

It is easy to build a fence from an inexpensive and reliable material. It is enough to deal with fasteners, markings and a plan for future construction. For example, a slate fence will last longer than an untreated board. And in private households they even try to use old roofing material - from it you can make a fence for the back of the site. It turns out that both a new and already used slate are suitable for work.

White fence - "the great American dream"

One of the widespread ideological clichés of the last century was the expression "the great American dream", which implied the material and spiritual values of the American nation. A special symbol of property well-being and the embodiment of the coveted goal has become a white fence that encloses a neat lawn and a neat little house of the average US citizen.

White fence is beautiful

And no matter what they say about the notorious white fence, this type of designation of the boundaries of the site is really beautiful. Modern industry offers an almost perfect solution to the question of a dream fence - PVC fences.

A plastic fence (this is how these products are usually called) can be of very different designs: lattice, wicker, type-setting, have deaf sections or imitate a classic picket fence. Be high (up to 2 m) and low, more suitable for fencing flower beds. And yes, PVC products are not only produced in white. They can be perfectly matched to the shade of the vinyl siding house cladding.

Low fencing for flower beds is often made of PVC.

Although white and beige options are the most popular. For the same reason as light siding: coloring increases the cost of the product, and bright colors of PVC are also not very stable to ultraviolet rays - they fade.

In addition to the intake sections, the set includes various accessories: gates and wickets, tops for pillars and other elements that allow you to easily create a single complete ensemble. The cost depends on the height, complexity of the fence pattern, color and manufacturer. The price of 1 running meter of a white PVC fence of the picket type (as in the first photo), including all components, is 2930 rubles. And for the organization of flower beds, you can pick up plastic fences in our market.

Do-it-yourself fence from a professional sheet: a step-by-step photo report

One of the most inexpensive fences for a summer residence or a private house is from corrugated board. Its design is simple - dug-in pillars, to which transverse lags are attached. A profiled sheet is attached to this lattice with screws or rivets. Everything is really simple, especially if you know how to use a welding machine. Although there is a technology without welding - on bolts or on wooden beams. In any case, you can build a fence made of corrugated board with your own hands. You can do all the work alone, if necessary, but when mounting sheets it is more convenient with an assistant.

Fence for a private house - an overview of popular types +98 photos

It is difficult to imagine a private house that does not have a fence. The fence performs several functions, such as protecting the site from outsiders and ennobling the site.

Also, the fence is a kind of division of the territory between neighbors. The fences in the foreground of the house reflect the owner's face.

Installation of a fence is troublesome, because it is necessary to conduct land surveying, otherwise problems with neighbors may arise.

It should be remembered that according to the law, any protective structure must be located at least three meters from the house. You also need to choose the material from which the fence will be made, its height.

Modern finishing materials and methods of their installation are varied. Fences are divided according to cost, strength and visual appeal.

Wrought iron

Wrought iron fences are attractive, expensive, and provide reliable protection.

The price of such products is very expensive due to the labor intensity of production. The disadvantages include the fact that you can see everything through a forged fence, and this is not always acceptable.

From a profile sheet

These fences are quick to erect and not expensive. Such fences look good, the color palette is varied.

You can build such a fence yourself, without any extra effort. The main thing when installing such a fence is the presence of cemented pillars.

Brick

A popular type of fencing, protective qualities are at a height. The appearance with the correct laying is excellent. It looks expensive and defiant.

Quite an expensive type of fencing, a lot of bricks are used when laying it out. Fence bricks are used for facing. There are basic color variations.

Stone

This fence is similar to brick, but looks more advanced. The reliability of such fences is good. The price category for this material is high.

Basically, stone is used in combination with other materials such as wood, profile sheet.

Wooden

Wooden fences are quickly erected, with proper preparation of the material, they have good properties against external factors.

There are practically no protective functions, because it can be broken without much difficulty. The price of such fences is not great, and is the most budgetary of its kind.

When choosing the type of fence, you need to think about how long the fence will be installed. If a temporary fence is required, then a regular chain-link mesh is perfect.

If you need a long-term fence for many years, you should approach the choice thoroughly, and think over all the points. Depending on the material of manufacture of the fence, the construction time will vary.

For example, if the choice fell on a brick or stone fence, then the laying will take a long time, and you may also need a foundation. This is due to the fact that the brick is a heavy material and in the absence of a foundation, the fence may fall after several years.

And the construction of a wooden fence requires only the presence of pillars, the assembly is fast.

Having chosen the material of the future fencing, you should think about its color. Designers recommend choosing a fence to be guided by the color scheme of your home.

But there are also standard solutions to this issue. For example, red and brown colors, as well as their shades, do not go out of fashion. Such options are considered win-win, and look good on any site.

Choosing a fence for your personal plot is fun and troublesome at the same time.

The need to comply with the rules and certain methods of installing fences is inconvenient. But having a beautiful and durable fence on your site is a must.

Key features

Boards are the most optimal option for making fences. You can buy them or use the lumber already available on the farm. Before you make beds of boards, you need to decide which version of the border to choose for this.

The WPC board adheres quite tightly to the ground during installation, leaving no visible gaps.

Moreover, the box made of wood board perfectly retains moisture, thanks to which the plants germinate faster.

The garden fence board has the following features and benefits:

  • acceptable price
  • ease of container assembly
  • ease of maintenance in the greenhouse
  • aesthetically pleasing appearance
  • durability with proper care.

Beautiful vegetable garden: a combination of aesthetics and benefits

The easiest way to make your garden attractive is to plant the plants not in separate crops, but in mixed plantings. There are many crops that, when planted nearby, can provide symbiotic protection from pests, increase yields and create interesting compositions by combining plants in height and color.

Creating a garden with your own hands, the beds can be made in several ways:

    Flower beds with your own hands. In the center, a trellis or ladder is installed, along which beans are allowed to curl, and a row of eggplants is planted around, followed by a row of peppers, a row of lettuce and a row of cabbage. Parsley bushes can be planted along the curb. Such a multi-tiered multi-colored bed looks impressive and bears fruit well.

  • Triangular. This shape looks good along the fence of the site. It is better to do the tiering here not in a circle, but in floors oriented along the fence, making out a fence in the country. The tallest plants are planted in the background.
  • Rabatki. Narrow plantings along the paths work well for low, fluffy bushes such as spinach, lettuce, parsley. They can be planted in 2-3 rows. Cabbage alternating with hosta bushes will also look spectacular.
  • The beds can be raised relative to the soil level using a decorative fence, inside which fertile soil is filled. The fence is made of boards, slate, bricks, large stones, and a fence can also be made of plastic panels. The soil can be filled up, making a "layer cake" out of it: put old rags, kitchen cleanings, small branches down, put last year's leaves or grass on top, and fertile soil on the very top.

    The lower layers will gradually overheat, increasing the thickness of the fertile soil, and releasing heat, which will allow prolonging fruiting in the fall. And next spring, such a bed will quickly warm up and earlier it will be possible to plant vegetables or flowers, starting to equip your garden in the vegetable garden.

    The concept of landscaping is applicable not only to lawns and other recreational areas. A properly planned and equipped garden will be no less a decoration of the site. Many crops are beautiful during growth, flowering and fruiting. The variety of colors of peppers and tomatoes, cabbage and salads, herbs and pumpkins fell in love with garden designers, who created various types of ornamental gardens.

    English vegetable garden

    This style of planting is dominated by a lawn with vegetables and flowers interspersed with lawns. And the fence and facade of the house are decorated with pots and pots. Planting is not divided into a garden and a vegetable garden, everything grows together and is combined very harmoniously. Vertical gardening is an obligatory element of English design. If you build a gazebo on the lawn, you can let Turkish beans (multi-flowered beans) bloom along its walls, blooming with bright red flowers.

    The length of the vines of this plant reaches 3 m, so the gazebo will be braided quickly and densely. The beans are not only beautiful, but they can also tolerate light shading from the north side of the gazebo.

    This plant can be used to delineate zones and create hedges. Daisies planted among tomato bushes will not only create bright spots, but also attract beneficial insects that destroy aphids and tomato caterpillars.

    Red lettuce, purple kohlrabi and red cabbage, which contrast well with the surrounding lawn, will add variety to the beds. All the free land of the site is planted with a mixture of bent grass, bluegrass and fescue and periodically trimmed. The beauty of this chic emerald lawn in the country will emphasize the bright spots of the neat multi-colored beds located on it. An ideal and budget option. And all vertical surfaces are covered with climbing plants. If you put the trellis in front of the house, then the ivy curling along it will help hide the peeling wall. The veranda and fence are covered with wisteria or bindweed, which will add charm to flower beds with vegetables and herbs.

    French vegetable garden

    The beds of strict geometric shapes are separated by garden paths, and the edges of the beds are necessarily decorated with borders of stunted plants. Here again ordinary or curly parsley, salads of different colors will help out.

    Even ordinary onions look attractive in geometric plantings. To combine a garden and a vegetable garden, you can use pansies, undersized marigolds or calendula as a border.

    Four principles for creating a French garden:

    • alternation in planting colors
    • geometric layout
    • even rows of plants
    • beautiful paths, the color of which contrasts with the green of the plants.

    French beds can be flush with the ground or raised to dominate the composition. Planting of plants is carried out strictly along straight lines. It is most convenient to do this along the stretched string.

    Marigolds, snapdragons, lettuce, calendula, ornamental cabbage, herbs, carrots, beets are most suitable for French beds. A beautiful landscape is not formed in one week. It is not enough to know how to make beds in the garden, you need to figure out how to arrange them and what plants to plant.

    You should find a middle ground between originality and ease of care, take into account the slopes and heights available on the site, take into account poorly drying lowlands. You should not chase exotic crops that grow poorly in a given area, but rather give preference to zoned plants.
